Chapter 13
Alexis watched the bustling scenery of midtown Manhattan roll by through the tinted window of the hired town car. It was late Monday afternoon, just before five, and the heavy foot and vehicle traffic flowing around the car reflected that.
For the life of her, she couldn’t figure out how people drove in New York City. Between careless pedestrians, distracted tourists, bicycle rickshaws, and horse-drawn carriages, the roads were a complete circus. Add in the influx of drivers who seemed solely focused on reaching their destination five minutes ago, and she knew she would never get behind the wheel of a vehicle here.
Bryan, seated to her left on the black leather seat, seemed more interested in his phone than in taking in the sights. He had the phone resting on his leg, scrolling through his social media feed with one hand. His other hand had made its home on her skirt-clad thigh, and he’d been touching her that way since the moment they’d climbed into the car at LaGuardia. That was after he’d spent the entire hour-long flight from RDU with his arm draped around her shoulder.
She glanced at his large, strong hand where it rested and was struck by how accustomed she’d become to having him touch her.
The town car made a right onto Madison Avenue from Thirty-Ninth, and Alexis ran a hand over her hair. The strands hung loose because she’d had to take off her metal hair clip at the airport and hadn’t put it back on yet. Rifling through her handbag, she dug out the clip and reached up to secure her hair just as the car pulled up at the curb in front of the Library Hotel. A smile tipped the corners of her mouth. She’d stayed there once before and found the accommodations charming, unique, and well worth their elevated price.
The driver got out of the car, opening the door for Bryan on his way to the trunk. While the driver handled their baggage, Bryan came around to her side and opened the door for her. Taking his extended hand, she let him help her out onto the sidewalk. As they passed beneath the beige stone archway over the entrance, he held open the door for her with his free hand.
Inside, she took in the familiar warmth of the Library’s lobby. Soft beige tile floors mimicked the soft hue of the smooth ceiling above, where recessed lighting lit the space. Warm, dark wood paneling gave unique character to the walls, and the camel-colored furniture, with soft, tufted cushions, welcomed visitors to sit down. Her favorite elements were the bookshelves, bursting with selections beckoning to be read. The colorful spines drew her eye right away, just as they had the first time she’d entered the place.
“Nice place,” Bryan commented as he led her toward the front desk. “You can check in first.”
She nodded and stepped up to the desk.
The smiling clerk spoke then. “Welcome to the Library Hotel. Are you checking in today?”
“Yes.” Alexis handed over her driver’s license and credit card.
